He had ended up in a town the size of which he had never fathomed possible. It was walled off, and every street was paved; barely any grass grew, and it smelled entirely of people and stone, nothing natural. Merchants in bright clothes stood on street corners, yelling about their goods; stray animals darted back and forth, just as Sif did. It dizzied him.

Music spilled out of buildings that smelled like liquor; a woman fought with her husband on an upper balcony. He looked around for some place with less noise, and found that his efforts were fruitless. Even the alleys were full of loud people.

On his first night in this town, he succeeded only in finding a place to sleep.
