William had never heard such a thing before. He looked up from the towel he had been using to soak up his sweat.

" What is it?" he asked. The thought was ridiculous. He had won their 'mock' battle, after all.

The Palisiman looked over at him in the dying sunlight.

" You place no value on your own body," they spoke. " You desire victory more than you desire life."

William wasn't quite sure what to say.

" I can pass you with the highest marks," the instructor said. " But that does not change that one day, you will come to a fight where you must choose between winning and a crucial part of yourself. And what you choose may kill you."
